Lions are considered as second big cats after tigers. They are carnivorous mammals. Till date, 7 species of lions have been recognized. They are White, Cave, American, African, Mountain and Asiatic lion. These animals are native to North-west India and Africa. They can easily be spotted in open woodlands as well as plains. There average size can be approximately four feet and weight can lie anywhere between 300-550 pounds. Generally, Lions prefer to hunt during night time, yet it is not a hard and fast rule for them.
On an average, a lion can live for 15 years; however, if they are bred in captivity, this duration can be around 20 years too. Another thing is cross breeding of lions with tigers. It is quite popular in present times. A fascinating fact about lion is the speed with which it can run. Maximum figure can be 80 km per hour. Another thing about these fierce animals is their social nature. No, they do not socialize with any other animals or humans! So, never even think about befriending them, if you happen to be on a wild safari! However, they have their own small families and hence they socialize in their community.
It is commonly seen that if a new male enters any pride (group of lion or its family), it can kill the cubs. This is done to make sure that future cubs will be his and not of any other lion! Lioness is responsible for hunting while lion takes care of defense of the pride.
